One-hundred years old and looking good!

20 Nov

Elizabeth Arden is 100 years old and to celebrate the skin care giant have launched a limited edition Eight Hour Cream in a vintage-meets-5th-Avenue pots, which I think you’ll agree will make the perfect stocking filler this Christmas.

This little pot of cream can be used for everything from chapped lips, dry cuticles, unruly eyebrows, cracked feet, glossy eyelids (i.e mix with dark eye shadow to achieve a sexy smoky eye effect) and is great to keep your skin hydrated on long flights.

The Must Have Glitter Eye Shadow

24 Sep

For years I’ve been trying to find a glittery eye shadow that (a) is as glittery on my eyes as it is in the container because often I find I’m disappointed with the quality of glitter post application, and (b) that the colour stays true instead of fading once applied and, (c) is so light weight it won’t aggravate my eyes or cause tearing.

So I’ve tried many of the expensive brands over the years and in the end I just gave up and thought the problem was perhaps with the applicator (me!) as opposed to the products. Then last week I was in Boots and came across My Face Blingtone eye shadow collection, what particularly caught my eye was the Crystalline Green colour – the perfect match for my hazel eyes.  So I purchased the green and also an incredible iridescent blue called Caribbean Queen as they were running a special offer, two for €15.

At home later the night I tried it. I didn’t even use a brush, simply rubbed some on my eyelid to see what the colour would be like on – I was amazed by the results. How was it possible that one careless application could look this good? Then I applied it using my eye brushes and the results were near professional. This is the perfect shadow for someone who’s given up on glitter.

LiLash Purified Eyelash Stimulator works, but at what cost.

23 Sep

The good news is this product works, in only two and half weeks I was seeing results – longer, glossier thicker lashes.

The bad news.

It began to irritate my skin, it was only a mild irritation and itch but enough for me to look into the ingredients which is what I should have done before I tried this product. It contains Prostaglandin, the possible side effect from this chemical include eye colour change. What was even more worrying was the fact that it contains a preservative called methylchloroisothiazalinone. In high concentrations this could cause chemical burns and it is a skin and membrane irritant, thus the pigmentation changes.

Would you brush your teeth in public? Well now you can.

21 Sep

Applying make-up at a dining table? No way.  Pluck your eyebrows in public view of anyone? Would prefer not. File your nails in the office? Okay, sometimes, but only if a nail breaks. Brush your teeth while waiting for the bus? WHAT?

That’s right. Apparently it’s just fine to wash your pearly whites on a bus, in the back of a taxi, or where ever the mood takes you. And that’s why Colgate have launched single-use toothbrushes. The blue bead released a minty flavour as the plastic bristles scrub your teeth (no rinsing required) and they’ve apparently come a long way from the little plastic one-use tooth brushes you used be able to buy in public bathrooms of swanky hotels.

Colgate Wish Peppermint Brushes are available from amazon.com and drugstore.com $2.50 for four.

Paying for the science is worth the money – Perricone MD High Potency Eye Lift

14 Sep

Perricone MD High Potency Eye Lift.

In truth I would pay all sorts of ridiculous sums of money or even pull out the big guns in the form of my credit card if I was guaranteed that a beauty product would work, that it really would do what it says on the label.  And I too know the disappointment of spending a vast sum of  money on a product which is about as potent and effective on lines as whipped cream, so I don’t say this lightly –  Perricone MD High Potency Eye Lift works.

What you’re not paying for is an expensive perfume  or fancy packaging, what you are paying for is scientifically proven ingredients.

I saw this product working immediately, after the first application the fine lines around my eyes began to blur and ultimately dissolve.  It also tightened the skin without causing that drying sensation I’ve experienced with other eye products.

I would not hesitate in buying it again, even at this price, it’s worth every penny and it was no surprise to later learn that this product is a best-seller and recommended by dermatologists.

Update with purple this season

11 Sep

Purple, violet, lavender, lilac are huge on-trend colours for this season. If you’re not bold enough to wear this colour on your lips then consider it as an eye-shadow. It’s incredibly flattery on every skin tone and colouring, particularly redheads. And is the quickest way to update to your make-up.

Bold makeup looks for Camilla’s 2010 show

3 Sep

Camilla Franks is famous for her very colourful and beautiful katans, she directed that the  makeup at her 2010 show to be  theatrical so of course she turned to Mr Colour, makeup artist, Napoleon Perdis.

Step-by-step Guide to Creating Perfect Feline eyes as seen on the A/W 2010 catwalks

2 Sep

  1. Pick up a gel liner, we love Bobbie Brown’s classic for its durability and ease of use.
  2. Select an angular eyebrow brush to create the flick at the outer edge of the eyes.
  3. Rather than sweeping strokes use short but confident movement.
  4. Use a straight line across the lids as opposed to following the curve of the eye.
  5. Create the thicker line at the inner eye and trail it outwards as seen above.
  6. Depending on how dramatic you want the look keep the flick narrow and short or wide and long.
  7. Attach winged lashes, concentrating the mascara at the roots for a throwback to the glam 50s

Meow – Fetching Feline Finds for the eyes A/W 2010 Trend

2 Sep

Sleek hair, strong lips, contour under the cheekbone and feline kohl-rimmed eyes with winged lashes, oh how very A/W 2010.

I think the full feline craze is best left for the catwalks or brave sixteen year olds. I, myself, am trending more towards the sensual black eyeliner as perfected by the original sex bomb Brigitte Bardot, and perhaps I’ll play with a little feline flick for fun Saturday night antics.

Though I also adore how celebrities have interpreted the look, such as the beautiful Christina Hendrick who used light brown shadow to softly turn up the look.

And of course Kate Hudson, who nearly always gets it right.

Just like Nicole Richie who’s famous for her cats eyes

Inside Kim Kardashian’s Makeup Bag. Her must-have proucts.

31 Aug

Did you ever notice how celebrities rarely seem to suffer from the unattractive shiny face us mere mortals do when we’re photographed, Kim says it’s thanks to Blot Film by MAC, “Blottting is a must for every bag. It’s super portable and perfect to touch up my skin – and get rid of the shine”

Kim’s favorite most versatile product is Glam Balm, which she says she uses to tame flyaway hair, moisturise her lips and keep her brows in shape.

I’ve used it too and it’s a much nicer texture than the Elizabeth Arden eight hour cream, though quite a bit more expensive. I do love it too though, it’s also great for cuticles and even feet!

To keep her glow Kim applies a Blushable Creme Stick by NYC New York Colour, “This is a super blendable blush that can act as a lipstick in case I need a touch up,” she says.

Her preferred foundation is Makeup For Ever HD Foundation and Powder and she also regularly uses M.A.C. Zoom Mascara and is a big fan of La Mer The Lip Balm.

How to achieve the Perfect Pout.

30 Aug

Top Tips for the Perfect Pout

Avoid licking your lips as digestive enzymes in your saliva can make skin sore and wetting you lips like this causes dryness.

If your lips are particularly lined search out products that contain skin repairing peptides such as palmitoyl oligopeptide and hyaluronic acic.

For excessive dry lips use a balms that contains shea butter and/or avocado oil.

If lips are cracked, cut a Vitamin E capsule and smooth it over your lips.

Use a new toothbrush to brush off flaky skin, but be gentle with this exfoliation treatment, follow by a lip cream or balm.

Bleached eyebrows – trend for a/w 2010

23 Aug

At the Bottega Veneta Spring 2010 RTW show in Milan the models’ eyes seemed to pop, not only because of their amazing glitter eye make-up (happy dance, glitter is back for a/w 2010) but also because their eyebrows had been bleached to a pale shade of blond, so much so that the Caucasian models looked as if there were eyebrow-less, focusing all the attention on their eyes.

The models in Miu Miu’s stunning new advertising campaign are also without brows.

The bleached eyebrows or no eyebrows has been seen in earlier seasons but it’s never been as strong as it is now.

Though I think you have to be incredibly beautiful to pull off this look and even at that it doesn’t always work.

Here’s how one of the most beautiful women in the world might look without brows – Angelina Jolie.

So, what do we think?

Will it become main-stream?

Best on-line beauty stores with worldwide delivery.

22 Aug

On pay day I used love nothing more than skipping into an upmarket department store to sample the delights at the cosmetic counters, but over the years some haughty sales people staffing these counters have turned it into a fairly traumatising experience.

You know the type, they look you up and down, are snippy and condescending when they realise you’re not going to buy a 200euros tub of face-cream without sampling it and I don’t just mean a dab on the back of my hand because that’s about as helpful as lawnmower. I need a proper sample, a sachet which will let me test the product at home, when I’ve had a chance to wash off the day’s grime and can investigate the product’s possible merits. Even though the sales person has a drawer of samples, her reply to my request is, ‘sorry, samples only come with purchases’.

If I were purchasing the product I wouldn’t need a sample, I explain, but she gives me one of those withering looks sales people reserve for such annoyances as customers.

In truth, it’s more their tone and bad attitude that kills me, so much so I now do almost all my cosmetic shopping on-line, which is not only cheaper but also more convenient without the chance of being looked down upon.

Here’s my top three on-line cosmetic stores.

Shaping your eye brows with a stencil.

20 Aug

Okay, I shouldn’t really post this because I haven’t actually tried this product but  I can’t stop myself from sharing because it made me laugh.

This, my friends, is the eye brow stencil.

You quite literally stencil the shape of a perfect brow onto your face and use it for a guide when tweezing,  afterwards wash the colour off your face and stencil.

I can envisage so many problems with this because aren’t each person’s eye brows unique, it’s not a case of one size fits all.

What next, a stencil for hair dressers.

Okay, this cynical Sally better stop because who knows, maybe they’re exactly what we need.

I will see if I can get my hands on one of these and  report back.

If you’ve tried one let me know.

Goodbye puffy red eyes – Ocusoft Lid Scrub Foaming Eyelid Cleaner

17 Aug

I presented myself to the eye-specialist with very dry eyes, a condition I thought I’d developed from spending too long on the computer, but he identified a different cause, namely my eye-make remover, which he considered ‘harsh’ even though the labelling stated otherwise.

Instead, he recommended Ocusoft Lid Scrub Foaming Eyelid Cleaner.

This is an outstanding product. It gently removes all eye-make up but doesn’t dry my eyes. Within a couple uses my itchy puffy red eyes were a thing of the past.

What I liked most about this product was the fact that not only did it remove all my eye make-up, it also felt like a ‘treatment’, lubricating my eyes.

I gave a sample of this to my friend who uses contact lenses and also suffers from dry eyes.  She too is now a convert and says it make wearing her lenses much more comfortable.

NYX Eyeshadow Base Primer

16 Aug

NXY primer does what is says on the tin. My eye make-up stayed put all day, the primer kept my eye-shadow looking fresh, preventing it from melting into the little creases on my eye-lids! I found it also made my eye-shadow colour pop, it went on smooth and best of all it’s quite inexpensive, about half the price of the Urban Decay primer I’d previously used and also liked.

Tarte LipSurgence Natural Lip Stain

12 Aug

When I first saw these lip markers  I instantly thought of the 80s and  lip-liner and how I’d never go back to using a pencil because natural looking glossy lips with a hint of colour are far more attractive. That was, of course, until I somewhat reluctantly tried this product.  Firstly, it’s not a pencil.  It’s not chalky or dry.  It doesn’t drag on lips. It is in fact packed with moisture and  plant nutrients, yet  it’s not heavy like a lipstick, it smooths on with a sheer wash of a gloss but the long-lasting staying power of lipstick.
It’s going to be a must in my make-up bag this season.
