Take the shine off.

11 Nov

There’s a big difference between sporting a ‘healthy dewy glow’ and looking like your face has underground oil rigs that have just sprung some leaks – namely on your nose, forehead and chin. We’re all familiar with that unattractive sheen which makes us glow in photos, and which always occurs at the most inopportune times like during your first date with Mr Right, or as you sit in the waiting room before your big interview or on your wedding day.  Instead arm yourself with the ‘shiny girl’s saviours’ which promise to take the shine off your face (in the best possible way).

After your make-up application is complete fix it in place with a light spritz of Urban Decay All-Nighter Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray (Available from Boots).

When the sheen strikes the last thing you want to do is apply more face powder as it just gives a chalky finish which can end up leaving your make-up looking blotchy and heavy, instead try Paul and Joe miniature Blotting Paper (

Or The Body Shop Tea Tree Facial Blotting Tissues (also comes in Camomile for sensitive skin) or Dior Blotting papers, one sheet is enough to blot the whole face during touch-ups or when humidity hits.

La Prarie Caviar Concealer Foundation.

La Prarie Caviar Concealer Foundation

Foundation, without question is the most important part of your make-up bag to get right because let’s face it, few of us have perfect skin, yet no one wants to look like they’re wearing a mask of foundation to hide those flaws. We all want to appear ‘naturally’ beautiful. Yet the quest to find a foundation which looks and feels light and natural but which gives adequate coverage and staying power is often a difficult one.

When it comes to foundation I have tried most of the major brands but I keep returning to La Prarie Caviar Concealer Foundation.

As foundations go this is one of the most expensive, retailing at almost two hundred euros. (I know *gasp*) It is however worth every single penny because in return it gives the illusion of a flawless natural skin tone – lasting for the whole working day without touch-ups.

It also works to counteract the signs of aging with a build in age-minimizing treatment that promotes smoother complexion. You will notice an immediate improvement in the condition and appearance of your skin. It doesn’t block pores or dry into the lines on my face and it has the basis SPF 15.

The foundation comes with a matching concealer, mini make-up brush and small mirror, so it’s almost like buying two products, or at least this is what I tell myself.

A very small amount is required so a bottle of this foundation lasts over a year, even with daily use.

Where to buy it:

It retails in stores for about €180, but I buy mine online from for €153, the postage is free and added loyalty discounts are available, so even with customs duties it still tends to work out cheaper though it takes 2-3 week for it to arrive.  It’s sometimes better to buy it in-store, especially if you’re trying to find the right colour for your skin.

In Ireland it’s only available from Brown Thomas on Grafton Street, Dublin 2.

In England you can purchase it from House of Fraser.  See for your nearest store.
