Serums – Skincare’s new Superheroes

14 Nov

Serums have undoubtedly become the superheroes of skincare.  Demand is growing so quickly for high potency serums that Olay’s waiting list reached 10,000 for its new serum Regenerist 3 Point Super Serum. After using this product for a month it’s easy to see what all the fuss is about, it really does work just as well as many of its more expensive counterparts (Cost €38)

How do serums differ from face creams?

A serum does not replace your moisturiser, rather it should be layered beneath your daily face cream where it will act like a bespoke troubleshooting treatment. They are designed to be intensive, penetrating beyond the top layer of the epidermis, creating real results which can be seen the morning after you’ve applied a serum -even for the first time, and it allow you to give yourself the type of treatment which was previously only available in salons.

Some of the Best Serums on the market.

Kate Moss reveals how she creates her famed bedhead rock chic look

3 Nov

Kate Moss’s famed bedhead rock chic look is created by dry shampoo, in particular, Klorane’s Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk (£6.95) which she says is her all time favourite and she’s not even getting paid to endorse it. She’s a genuine devotee.

Other celebrity fans of the product include Britney Spears, Kirsten Dunst, Chloe Sevigny, Kristin Cavillari and Mischa Barton. Even if you’re not an A-lister this is a life-saver-in-a-bottle which no woman’s handbag can be without. It boosts volume, turns up the lights on highlights, adds texture, breathes life back into hair which insists on falling flat and banishes greasy roots. But most importantly it means you don’t have to wash you hair daily, which may sound scummy, but I’m all for it if it means giving me back an hour for myself that I’d usually spent on styling my hair.

Results

It’s a TEN! What a find. At first I couldn’t imagine that one product would actually do all that this one claimed to. I tried it for a week with no other styling products, and since that week I’ve been converted. Especially good when I get out of the pool and my hair is dehydrated and unmanageable. I have very thick  curly hair that I blow dry straight and then use a GHD so it’s not in great condition naturally, after only ten minutes this product showed real results, I also found it brought out my highlights.

LiLash Purified Eyelash Stimulator works, but at what cost.

23 Sep

The good news is this product works, in only two and half weeks I was seeing results – longer, glossier thicker lashes.

The bad news.

It began to irritate my skin, it was only a mild irritation and itch but enough for me to look into the ingredients which is what I should have done before I tried this product. It contains Prostaglandin, the possible side effect from this chemical include eye colour change. What was even more worrying was the fact that it contains a preservative called methylchloroisothiazalinone. In high concentrations this could cause chemical burns and it is a skin and membrane irritant, thus the pigmentation changes.

Cheryl Tweety new Vogue Cover Girl see pic

6 Sep

Doesn’t Cheryl Tweety look amazing on the October cover of Vogue? Vulnerable and seductive all at once.  If there was ever a face that make-up loves this is it, and she’s a perfect example of how false lashes can transform your face from to pretty to stunningly glam.

British Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief Alexandra Shulman says Cheryl was a  “trouper” on the set, as she must have been feeling ill because the day after she was diagnosed with malaria.

Is Cheryl the new Princess Diana, or am I the only one who see the similarities?

What products Jennifer Aniston uses to get the Californian Beach Babe Glow

2 Sep

The Californian Glow

To achieve the California glow on her face she uses Chanel Bronzing Powder in Desert Corail, but be warned, this works best on those with an olive or tanned skin, not so great on us Lillie Whites and if we must bronze then apply lightly.

Sun-kissed Hair

She get regular Baby Blond Hairlights. Her colourist mixes shades of blond with more natural sandy tones for a California beach girl look to bring out her green eyes.

Skincare.

She’s a fan of the Epicuren skin care line which is made with a natural, pure ingredient that deliver antioxidants and enzymes, both essential for rejuvenate.

See www.epicuren.com for stockists.

Facials.

She also enjoys a weekly session with her highly trained facialist, alternating between seaweed and oxygen facials to maintain and improve elasticity and texture.

Please pop back for our review of the oxygen facials which Eva Longoria told InStyle magazine she was addicted to!

Step-by-step Guide to Creating Perfect Feline eyes as seen on the A/W 2010 catwalks

2 Sep

  1. Pick up a gel liner, we love Bobbie Brown’s classic for its durability and ease of use.
  2. Select an angular eyebrow brush to create the flick at the outer edge of the eyes.
  3. Rather than sweeping strokes use short but confident movement.
  4. Use a straight line across the lids as opposed to following the curve of the eye.
  5. Create the thicker line at the inner eye and trail it outwards as seen above.
  6. Depending on how dramatic you want the look keep the flick narrow and short or wide and long.
  7. Attach winged lashes, concentrating the mascara at the roots for a throwback to the glam 50s

Meow – Fetching Feline Finds for the eyes A/W 2010 Trend

2 Sep

Sleek hair, strong lips, contour under the cheekbone and feline kohl-rimmed eyes with winged lashes, oh how very A/W 2010.

I think the full feline craze is best left for the catwalks or brave sixteen year olds. I, myself, am trending more towards the sensual black eyeliner as perfected by the original sex bomb Brigitte Bardot, and perhaps I’ll play with a little feline flick for fun Saturday night antics.

Though I also adore how celebrities have interpreted the look, such as the beautiful Christina Hendrick who used light brown shadow to softly turn up the look.

And of course Kate Hudson, who nearly always gets it right.

Just like Nicole Richie who’s famous for her cats eyes

Get the Versace Sultry Cat Walk look in three seconds flat.

Switching up the parting of your hair is a simple way to update any style and this is exactly what Guido Palau, renounced hair-stylist, did at the Versace show. In fact it’s a look we’ve often seen on Donatella Versace.

“A deep side-parting nods towards masculinity but with sexy attitude as well,” he explains. But the centre parting is even more sexy, confident and sultry.

For the Versace center-parting look, Guido applied Redken Velvet Gelatine 07 Cushioning Blow-dry Gel then set hair in large rollers for easy volume

Redken Velvet Gelatine 07 Cushioning Blow-dry Gel is available from http://www.onsalenow.ie and http://www.amazon.com

Charlize Theron’s favourite in-flight face product

20 Aug

Charlize is a fan of Truth Serum Collagen booster by Ole Henriksen – a vitamin C product which claims to plump up skin and keep blemishes at bay, while anti-oxidants protect from pollution, boost  collagen and promote a flawless complexion.

I thought to myself if this product only lives up to half these claims I’d be bathing in this stuff, irrespective of price, besides I was already a fan of the Ole Henriksen range.

Charlize likes using it on long-haul flights as she jets around the world.

At last, a celebrity who uses something other than Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream when flying, so I was excited to try this. I lathered it on for my drive from Derry to Tipperary, it’s about as long-haul and glamorous as I get right now.

My ‘truth’.

It really is a long ways to Tipperary.

I don’t always take my make-up off after a night out.

I have skin envy.

My Mui Mui wallet is fake.

I have bought weight-loss dvds from infomercials in the middle of the night.

I saw no  immediate results from this products, but I can be a persistent little fecker when I have to be so I continued with the regime.

I’ve almost finished a whole Truth Bottle and I don’t think I’d buy it again because for the price I paid I would have expected to see results.

Instead nada.

The Scent

Presumably it’s the vitamin C which gives the product its very orangey scent, though it’s not a smell I particularly liked because it seemed synthetic and over-powering.

The Pump

I also found the pump dispensed too much product. Even when I distributed it on my neck and chest it still remained sticky and clammy.

I’m a big fan of vitamin C products but I think the levels available in this product are perhaps too low and would work best for those with very sensitive skin. For those of us with lizard skin I’m all for nuclear levels of vitamin C because I need to see results!

Available from Harvey Nichols.

The Illuminating Finishing Powder by Stila is about as subtle as a spot-light

19 Aug

This Illuminating Finishing Powder by Stila is about as subtle as a spot light and is probably best used as a high-lighter, rather than a finishing powder.

If you want glitter – and by ‘glitter’ I’m talking Christmas morning at the North Pole after Mrs Claus has had one too many sherries while decorating the tree – then you’ll love this.  Me, I prefer to keep the decorations for the holiday season on my Christmas tree rather than my face.

Maybe if I were dark skinned this product and all its glitter would look good, but I’m a pale-faced pixie living on the edge of the western world who has never has a real tan (lots of fake tans of course, I am Irish after all) and glitter on a chlorinated skin tone is not hot.

My advice, for what it’s worth – avoid.

Available from Brown Thomas, Dublin

Jennifer Aniston says two euro bar of soap is the secret of her flawless complexion.

18 Aug

Jennifer Aniston has a complexion to die for, sun-kissed and flawless.

Her ‘secret’ (and I use this word lightly) is an inexpensive bar of soap – Neutrogena Transparent Facial Bar – which she says she has been using since she was a teenager.

‘I wake up and wash my face with Neutrogena face soap. I use a serum and then a Dr Hauschka day cream – that’s it!’ she says.

Of course I wanted to believe it’s just the two euro bar of soap that has her looking as she does, but then she added.

‘I run, work out every day. I do a lot of running – exercise is so important too,’ she says.

Still, I’m off to the supermarket to buy this bar of soap. Let’s hope it’s only matter of a few washes before my skin has the Jennifer Aniston glow!

Will report back soon 🙂

This week’s beauty find

3 Aug

I love nothing more than pointing my readers towards a product that really does work and isn’t all gimmick and no gain.

Lancaster Differently Nuti-Dermo Skin Engergy Flash Skincare brush glides on via a flat brush applicator, which I had a few issues over because I’m not sure it’s so hygienic, but still, it is convenient if you’re on the go.

Hyaluronic acid combined with collagen stimulator to restore density & resilience.  Blend of essential vitamins, trace elements & omegas 3+6 to provide healthy shine. Perfect for popping into your handbag without having to worry about spillages, convenient to use any time whenever your skin shows signs of fatigue, I’ve even used it over my make-up to revive my dry skin, though this isn’t what this product is intended for and is best used on a clean face.

For me, someone with dull skin who doesn’t get much sleep, this is a perfect find.
